Now that we’re into August, the start of the new school year is just a few weeks away. For lots of kids, the coming school year signals the start of a new struggle to keep up.

A backpack, notebooks, pens and paper are at the bottom of the priority list for many families. As the recession lingers on, a lot of moms and dads are doing all they can to keep the lights on in the house, healthy food on the table, and gas in the car. School supplies are a long way off.

If you live in Las Vegas or are planning to be there sometime between now and Sunday, August 15, you can help! Fox5, NV Energy and McDonalds kicked off their “Supply Our Students” campaign to help outfit local kids for school. The Salvation Army Family Services Department will distribute the school supplies on Saturday, August 21 to kids who have registered for help.

Here’s a list of supplies needed: backpacks, pens, pencils, gift cards, crayons, notebooks, loose leaf books and paper, calculators, glue sticks, highlighters, colored pencils, and tape.

And – as if that warm, fuzzy feeling you get from helping someone in need isn’t enough – you can drop by a participating McDonalds to make your donation and get a yummy snack as a thank you!
