In communities across the United States, Salvation Army officers and staff are helping folks put food on the table and keep a roof over their families’ head. Just like you and me, many of them started to think about Back to School weeks ago. But for some of those we serve, their thoughts aren’t always happy ones.

One of America’s treasures is in our old-school TV ad today!

Today's Celebrity Spokesperson!

His signature song was “Thanks for the Memories,” and boy did he give Americans some wonderful moments to remember.

Famous for his gentle humor and love of golf, this comedian was one of a number of well-known people who gladly recorded short television ads during the 50s to the 80s to encourage the public to support The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign.

And, he has something else special in common with The Salvation Army: his support for US troops.

In 1941 our Army joined a number of other charities in the creation of the United Service Organizations – called the USO. Now, no one is more closely associated with the USO than the comedian in today’s Red Kettle public service ad.
