Just imagine it, the words in the title were printed on the cover of an advertising supplement about The Salvation Army in a 1969 edition of the New York Times.
Last Friday we debuted this series about the 45 year-old ad we found in our files. The concept was created by J. Walter Thompson, the creative was done by students at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and the piece was funded by generous donors to The Salvation Army. Read more about it here.
The passage found in John 13:34 accompanied the beautiful rendering of the Army’s famous red shield logo as seen below.
Mamoru Shimokochi created the re-imagining of our shield complete with uniformed Salvation Army officers, our flag, the stars and stripes, and a bald eagle set on a backdrop of beautiful colors.
It was no surprise to me that a quick Google search for Shimokochi turned up some very impressive work.
He was hired right out of Art Center by the legendary Saul Bass and went on to create recognizable corporate identities for United Airlines, California Cheese, Avery, Quaker Oats Instant Oatmeal, United Way, and AT&T. Click here for a link to the Shimokochi-Reeves website.
